What I Love About It

Bumgenius Elemental Organic AIO One-Size Cloth Diaper ReviewThe real question is what’s not to love! I am very happy with this diaper and it has a lot of great features. The fact that it’s an All-In-One (AIO) diaper is awesome. There are no extra pieces, no pockets or stuffing involved. You just throw it in the wash, machine or hang dry, and then put it on baby just like a disposable. Then into the wash again. It really is that simple!

For an AIO, I was very surprised at how absorbent the Bumgenius Elemental Organic AIO diapers are. Most (okay, maybe all) AIO diapers I have tried thus far have simply not been absorbent enough for my heavy-wetter Baby M. I always, always have to add an insert or doubler. With the Bumgenius Elemental… not so! The 6-layer organic cotton inner is so absorbent and holds liquid so well that Baby M can make it to the next diaper change (about 2 hours) without leaks. To me, this is very impressive for an AIO.

I love that the sewn-in 6-layer cotton soaker is layered for quicker drying. After the initial wash, I threw the diaper in the dryer with my various microfiber inserts, and it was finished drying when they were. Most AIO’s take forever and a day to dry, so this was also a surprising feature. It’s nice also that the soaker is attached on both ends so that it stays in place and doesn’t shift around a bunch or need readjusting to put the diaper on.

The organic cotton inner is very soft, and while it doesn’t have the “stay-dry” feel that microfleece or suedecloth have, it is very gentle on the skin. The leg elastics are especially gentle on this diaper. The soft cotton is sewn all the way up to the PUL on the leg openingsBumgenius Elemental Organic AIO One-Size Cloth Diaper Review–without the “seam” that most cloth diapers have around the legs. It’s hard to describe exactly how the leg elastic is sewn, but the Bumgenius Elemental has by far one of the most gentle leg elastics I have found in a cloth diaper. No red marks here!

I like the stretchy closure tabs and it was easy to get a good fit on Baby M. The diaper is a little more “poofy” and not quite as trim as other AIO’s, but I still really like the fit and look of the diaper. The sizing is generous and I like that the diaper has a high rise. The sizing chart on the package says that the medium rise setting fits 17-22 lbs., but Baby M is about 25 lbs. and still wearing the diaper on the medium setting (he will be moving to the large setting soon though).

The diaper gets fairly little on the smallest setting, and while I’m not sure that the diaper would fit an 8 lb. newborn without leaking out the waist or leg holes, I do think the diaper would fit very well on a 10 lb. baby which is pretty good for a one-size diaper. For newborns and smaller babies I would go with the aplix closures to get a more exact fit. I find that snaps start working best once babies get a little older and chubbier, because you don’t have to be as exact with the sizing.

The colors are cute, and I’m so excited that the Bumgenius Elemental Organic AIO is soon to be released in the Albert and Lovelace prints!

What I Would Change

Not much! The only “big” thing I can really think of is that I wish the back elastic was sewn the same way that the leg openings are. The back elastic is pretty thin and it does dig into Baby M’s back and sides a little. I wish it was as gentle as the leg elastics.

I also wish that the diaper had an additional extra-small setting so that it could truly fit small to average newborns right from the start.

One thing I will also note is that the cotton soaker is a natural fiber, which means (as I mentioned before) it is does not have the “stay dry” feel that microfleece and suedecloth have. This means that when baby is wet, baby will FEEL wet. Baby M doesn’t particiularly like wearing diapers with natural fibers for this reason, so I always lay a microfleece liner on top of the diaper–and the problem is solved. You could also use the Bumgenius Stay-Dry Diaper Doublers for this purpose, which add a little more absorbency with 2 layers of microfiber topped with a layer of microfleece. Or, if you simply want an AIO diaper with a stay-dry inner, you might consider the Bumgenius Freetime AIO instead. I really do like the absorbency of the 6-layer cotton soaker though, and I know that many moms prefer organic and natural fabrics for their little ones.

The Bottom Line

Overall, I think the Bumgenius Elemental Organic AIO One-Size Cloth Diaper is really great! It’s absorbent, cute, quick-drying, and most of all super easy to use. It goes on just like a disposable and I don’t think anyone would have trouble using this diaper. I would definitely recommend it to others!

I like that I can add extra absorbancy if I need to! We almost never use AIO’s because I have the pee-pee king BUT we LOVE BG’s so if I could add some extra layers, that would be perfect :)

  2. Elissa Dinell says

The BGE diaper is my favorite of the BG line. The best part about it is that it’s so trim and I love having natural fibers against my baby’s bottom. Sometimes she’ll get irritated from the microfleece or suede cloth materials, but never with a natural fiber.

  3. says

I really like that it’s natural fibers. I think that microfiber, etc. will be a problem in our house because our HE machine just won’t get them clean enough. I also really like the fact that it’s a OS because I think we’ll get more use out of them.

i love how its an aio. i havent tried them yet and have been wanting to! I love my econobums made by the same company!! Look so cute too!

I like that this diaper is a fairly easy-to-use one! Some can be a bit complicated, and busy mamas don’t need complicated. :-)
