So many cloth diapering mamas love Sunbaby 4.0 One-Size Cloth Diapers but I had never tried them! I can’t wait to tell you about these adorable and affordable cloth diapers!

Things I Love About It
The first thing I’m going to say that I love is the PRINTS! Sunbaby has a bunch of prints to choose from and it seems I am always seeing new ones pop up. I love that they have “different” prints and not just standard run-of-the-mill prints that you see everywhere. Sunbaby sent me a diaper in Outer Space print and I love it! It’s really cute and bright, and I’ve never actually seen a cloth diaper with this print before.
These diapers are incredibly affordable! You can purchase them for as little as $4.00 each (without inserts) when buying a 12-pack… now THAT is a bargain! And the most you’ll end up paying for these diapers is $7.50 each (if you want to opt for a smaller 6-pack with 2 inserts per diaper) which is still an amazing price.
The inside of the diaper is soft and cushy microfleece. I don’t think I have felt softer or more plush microfleece on a diaper before. One of the main reasons we use cloth diapers is for Baby M’s comfort, so I am definitely loving the comfiness of this diaper.
The leg and waist elastic are extra gentle, and I was able to get a great fit without having the elastic pinch into his skin anywhere. There were NO red marks, which makes me very happy! The plush microfleece seems to add some extra padding around the elastic. There was no wicking or leaking either. I’m loving this diaper!
The bamboo inserts are a new feature at Sunbaby. They have just recently started making them and I was excited to try them. I really like bamboo because it’s soft, it doesn’t get stinky like microfiber, and it’s trim while also being very absorbent. The Sunbaby 4.0 Cloth Diaper came with 2 bamboo inserts. One is a 4-layer insert with 2 inner layers of microfiber and 2 outer layers of bamboo. The other is a 3-layer bamboo insert to use as a doubler. Baby M is a very heavy wetter, and together these inserts seem to equal ALMOST the absorbency of two regular microfiber inserts, but not quite. Our very heavy wetter Baby M can make it through about an hour and a half in the Sunbaby with both inserts, but not much longer before the inserts are soaked through. So overall I’m loving the inserts but I wish there was another 4-layer insert included and then we would be all set!
The pocket opening is very large, the PUL is smooth and easy to slid the insert against, and the microfleece is extra stretchy, making this diaper super easy to stuff! I love that you can also simply lay the inserts on top AI2-style instead of stuffing since they are bamboo and soft against baby’s skin.
The insert stopper is another neat feature on the Sunbaby 4.0. This is essentially a strip of PUL on the inner top panel that keeps wetness from the top of the insert from wicking out the top of the diaper.
The Sunbaby 4.0 One-Size Diaper actually comes in two sizes: Size 1 which is a “standard” one-size and better for smaller/skinny babies and Size 2 which is better suited for bigger/chunky babies and toddlers. Baby M falls in the latter category, so Sunbaby sent me a Size 2 to try out. The fit on Baby M (17 months and just over 25 lbs) was great!
Baby M wears the diaper on the second-to-largest rise snap setting, and snapped in a few snaps on the waist and legs, so there is definitely some room to grow.
Here is the diaper on the very largest setting possible:
One of the little details I appreciate on Sunbaby diapers is that the hip snap is covered except for the very biggest setting, and even then, only a female snap is against the baby’s skin on the very largest setting. On most diapers, the hip snap is a stud which can dig into the skin if it doesn’t have a place to snap into. I like that Sunbaby reverses the placement of the female snaps and studs for the hip snaps so that there’s no chance of the stud digging into skin and becoming uncomfortable.
On the smallest setting, the Size 2 Sunbaby is just slightly larger than a Bumgenius 4.0 Pocket Diaper. Here is a comparison picture of both:
Looking at the difference in the leg holes on the smallest setting, I think the Sunbaby Size 2 would probably start fitting well at about 12-15 lbs. So I wouldn’t say it’s a “true” one-size diaper, but for Baby M I like that it runs a little big because my concern now is finding a cloth diaper to get him through potty training. If you are looking to start using the Sunbaby diaper on a newborn, I would definitely go with Size 1 instead which is going to be smaller in general and around the leg openings.
Things I Would Change
There is very little I would actually change about this diaper because I really like it!
I do wish that the front panel had a few more snap settings, just to give me some extra reassurance that this diaper will fit Baby M until potty training.
As I mentioned before, the 4-layer bamboo insert and 3-layer doubler didn’t quite hold Baby M over until the next regular diaper change. I would love it if this diaper were offered with TWO 4-layer inserts plus the 3-layer doubler!
The snaps were just a tad more difficult to snap and unsnap than other diapers. I would like to see them snap/unsnap just a little more smoothly, but it’s not a huge deal.
The sewing and snap placement is not quite even throughout the diaper. This doesn’t affect function at all, and is totally understandable for a diaper that sells for as low as $4.00. Actually I was very surprised at the quality this diaper DOES have! You won’t even notice the tiny flaws unless you are looking for them.
The 4-layer bamboo insert gets a little “bunchy” on the inside after washing and doesn’t lay quite flat from there on out because the 2 inner layers of the insert are made of microfiber which does not shrink like bamboo does in the wash. I wish there was a way that they could preshrink the bamboo, or perhaps just use 100% bamboo inserts so they would lie flat. It’s not a real “problem” though, and the inserts are soft and fluffy enough that the bunching doesn’t make it uncomfortable for Baby M to wear.
I wish they offered an aplix version!
The Bottom Line
Overall I am genuinely impressed by Sunbaby 4.0 Cloth Diapers! Now I understand why everyone raves about them, especially for the price. They are great diapers, fit well, are so comfy and cute, and I’m loving the bamboo inserts. I would definitely recommend these to others and hope to add a few more to my stash!
